Death Match, has been called “the most entertaining reading series ever” by the LA Times and that it “helps revitalize the coolitude of the printed word” (Interview Magazine). It combines the intellectual buzz of a writers’ salon with the thrills and spills of X Factor.
So what happens at a Literary Death Match? Each episode of this competitive, humor-centric reading series features a thrilling mix of four acclaimed and emerging authors who perform their most electric writing in seven minutes or less before a lively audience and a panel of three allstar judges. After each pair of readings, the judges — focused on literary merit, performance and intangibles — take turns spouting hilarious, off-the-wall commentary about each story, then select their favorite to advance to the finals, when the show’s literary sensibility takes a turn for a comical climax (like a literary spelling bee or Pin-the-Mustache on Hemingway) to decide the winner.
“Since we did our first international show in Beijing three years ago, it’s been a dream to bring the show to Oslo,” said LDM creator and host Todd Zuniga, named a LA Times Face to Watch in 2012. “Our goal has always been to showcase and celebrate literature as a brilliant, unstoppable medium — and we’ve put together a fantastic lineup that will do just that. I couldn’t be more excited.”
The March lineup is headlined The night’s foursome of readers will include illustrator and children’s book author Reidar Kjelsen (the mind behind Otto Monster), columnist and fictionist Jan Grue (author of Alt under kontroll), poet wunderkind Hilde Susan Jaegtnes, and cultural commentator Guro Sibeko (author of Vingespenn,Ctrl+Alt+Delete and children’s book Blodmånenatta). They’ll be judged by Shining’s multi-talented frontman Jørgen Munkeby,
Vom and Ontz vocalist Mai Elise Solberg, and a literary merit judge to be announced shortly.
