Ensemble Free Theater Norway performs in Detroit

Appointment is a series of intimate theater pieces designed for an audience of one, performed within the context of an office space. Behind each door is 1-2 performers, presenting a work of approximately 10 minutes. Through the course of the evening, audiences will see 3-5 different Appointments in different unconventional theater spaces.

Appointment is a site-specific theater experience conceived & instigated by Aaron Landsman. EFTN performed last month at New York University´s Tisch School of the Arts, in a collaboration between NYU and EFTN lead by Mr. Landsman. This upcoming performance in Detroit will feature original work (in both Norwegian and English) by EFTN members Dushinka Andresen, Lars-Christian Bjørnsten Bredal, Christopher Pedersen Cook, Mette Fjæreide, Ida Mailen Hagerup, and Dina Narverud, as well as an additional work written & performed by Brendan McCall.

Ensemble Free Theater Norway was founded in July 2010 by American theater artist Brendan McCall to nurture young playwrights and directors, particularly within the Nordic region. The aim is to foster the resources necessary to create an independent theater scene within Norway that is global in perspective. EFTN is currently in the middle of a 12-week residency at the Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago, where they are given the opportunity to host classes, develop and rehearse new work, and see many performances within Chicago´s vast theater scene.

“We´re excited to be going to Detroit for the first time,” says McCall, “and to introduce this `microtheater´ project of Landsman´s to Wayne State. Maybe this could be the beginning of more links between EFTN and Detroit.”

McCall moved to Oslo in 2008, and served as the Rektor of The International Theater Academy Norway for 2 years, until June 2010. Before moving to Norway, McCall worked professionally as an actor, director, and choreographer out of New York for 18 years, and his work has been presented internationally in over 15 countries. Teaching appointments include Yale School of Drama (2002-08), New School for Drama (2005-08), New York University´s Tisch School of the Arts (1994-2001, 2004-05), and many more.
