Ghostmachine: Ibsen on Dutch Stage

Ghostmachine, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “Ghosts” was staged by the students of The International Theatre School in Norway (TITAN) in the Student Theatre Festival in Groningen, the Netherlands. After the success of the production in Norway, Ghostmachine had been invited to the the festival from 7-10 October, 2009.
Ghostmachine features original songs and a short film included in the performance, all created by students of TITAN. The play’s 5 characters are performed by 11 students, sometimes individually, sometimes simultaneously. And the production has an extensive use of movement, choreography, and physicality. The Rektor of TITAN, Brendan McCall noted that the alterations to the script were not done carelessly by crippling the play. Rather they consciously used the tools that they teach their students at TITAN to re-examine the play. He also added they managed to make their audiences re-discover’ Ibsen’s Ghosts in a new way.

First Norwegian Group in The Festival
It was the first time that the festival had ever had a thaeter group from Norway or Scandinavia. McCall, who also held a drama workshop in the festival, expressed his gratification of being pioneer in this field and explained they include an Ibsen production each academic year at TITAN as they think it gives acting students the opportunity to do substantial works of dramatic literature, such as Ibsen, Chekhov, Strindberg, Shakespeare, and others.
– The roles are rich, the language is so robust, and I think it is agood challenge for young actors to get some experience working with thesekinds of texts, noted McCall.

TITAN Re-Interprets Theatre
He also stressed that TITAN’s mission is not just presenting what there is ready but to develop new theatrical work, with an emphasis on ensemble, collaboration, re-interpretation of traditional forms of story telling. Ghostmachine was one of the good examples of these kinds of works which makes TITAN different from other theater institutions in Norway.
