She took off after only six kilometres and after that none of the other competitors caught a glimpse of Therese Johaug.
After only 10 kms the gap was 17 seconds and five kms later, it had grown to a full minute.
And after that the battle for gold was won. Therese Johaug can therefore call herself queen of the Falun2015 World Championships, with a total of three golds (skiathlon, relay and 30 km).
“It was my dream to take an individual gold medal and now here I am with two. Conditions were perfect today. Faced with these huge crowds – it’s a sporting dream come true,” says Johaug to SVT.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, she had won the silver medal in the 30 km mass start (free) and the bronze medal in the 10 km classical, she also finished fourth in the 15 km skiathlon.
Johaug and compatriot Martin Johnsrud Sundby became the first Norwegians to win the Tour de Ski when they won the women’s and men’s competitions in the 2013-14 edition of the race. Johaug subsequently won the overall and distance competitions in the 2013–14 FIS Cross-Country World Cup.
