Both teams created opportunies in an open match. But the German side went ahead with Sebastian Rudy's goal in 27th minute. THe first half ended with this goal. In the 20th minutes of the second half, Mattias Moström's scored the equalizer of Molde. In the more active second half, Stuttgart went ahead again 9 minutes after Molde's goal nine minutes. The goal came from in a free-kick organization with Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Ciprian Marica.
Molde caught Stutgard in two minutes when Magne Hoseth scored a fine individual goal, but Stuttgart had the last laugh when Martin Harnik headed in 82 minutes. In the following 8 minutes, there was no more goals and the match ended 3-2 for Stutgard.
Molde coach Kjell Jonevret said to UEFA's website: “Of course I'm not satisfied with the result, but I think it was a good game. Stuttgart were huge favourites beforehand and people only gave us a 2% chance of qualifying. We will go to Germany looking to score there, but Stuttgart are a big team and have a much better chance of going through.”
The second leg of the match will be played in Stuttgart next Thursday.
