World Cup is Kicked for Peace and Development in Norway

The conference titled “2010 FIFA World Cup as a Tool for Peace and Development” starts on Friday 9 October. The conference is organized by Norwegian Institute of International Affairs [NUPI]

The theme of the conference is the potential role of South Africa’s hosting the 2010 World Cup for its development, nation building and reconciliation. The organizers affirm that sport can help to achieve these three elements between people who have previously been in conflict.

The conference is part of the research project, Sports and Reconciliation, which is the outcome of a collaboration between NUPI and Rafto Foundation since 2006, and is held in cooperation with the South African Embassy in Norway, the Norwegian Sports College (NIH), Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee. It is thought that the conference will generate further academic discourse and interest in research on the sport’s role in reconciliation and development.

The conference is a continuation of the theme for this year’s seminar “Peace and Development; Inter Linked Prospects for Africa’s Future”, which NUPI and the Africa Group hosted.

In the frrame of the conference a delegation from South Afrika has come to Norway. The delegation includes the World Cup chief Dr Irvin Khoza, King Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi, Chief Mandela, Kaizer Motaung and Kjetil Siem from the Premier Soccer League in South Africa.
