Helicopter crash in Norway – 13 confirmed dead

The helicopter carrying 13 passangers crashed at Turøy in Hordaland on west coast of Norway. Eleven people have been found dead and two are missing.

The police confirmed that eleven of those on board were Norwegian, one was British and one Italian.

The helicopter was “totally destroyed”, VG reported. It was flying from the Gullfaks oil field to Bergen.

Eyewitnesses in the region reported seeing the helicopter’s rotor blade come loose.
“There was an explosion and a very strange engine sound. I saw the helicopter falling into the sea. Then I saw a big explosion,” a resident told local newspaper Bergensavisen.

Norwegian oil company Statoil confirmed that the aircraft was on assignment for it.
