The ground of the proposal is the threat assessment from PST which identifies soldiers and police as a potential terrorist target.
– Ministry of Justice has received a request from the Police Directorate for consent to armament. Ministry aims to answer it as quickly as possible, says Justice Minister Anders Anundsen to VG.
– Following a thorough evaluation, we concluded that the police need an additional tool to get prepared against this new threat. Therefore we ask for consent to uniformed personnel in security and emergency service armed with pistol until further notice, said Chief of Police Affairs Odd Reidar Humlegård.
The police authority also noted that this is not a general armament, but a limited measure as apart of an increased risk awareness in Norway.
Police Directorate now waits for a response from Ministry of Justice.
