The decline in the category of grand larceny from villas was 19.7% and petty theft from villas was 14.8%. For apartments, the decline rate was 16.2% and 4.1%, while the intrusion in the cabin reduced by 22.3%. Also the number of reported thefts from cars and vehicles went down, and there is a large reduction in the number of reported criminal damage by 16.4%.
– We assume that the decrease in thefts from residences is significant, since reviews of burglary is necessary for the insurance settlement. It is therefore very likely that residents experience fewer burglaries, and it is very positive, "said the police director Ingelin Killengreen.
Several reasons
Killengreen believes the efforts of the police has had effect on this positive trend.
-The police have worked purposefully against the mobile criminals with a foreign background, and we have succeeded in Oslo and several other places. We have also worked internationally to eradicate these mobile criminals, who are behind much of this type of crimes," said she.
East European Criminals on Top
In four years, the proportion of foreigners in Norwegian prisons has increased by over ten percent. Those coming from three European countries make the largest group. Lithuanian citizens make the largest group of the foreigners involved in crime in Norway, and the 77 Lithuanians are currently jailed. Poland is in second place with 72. On the other hand, the highest increase in three years occured among Romanians. In 2007, a total of 17 Romanians was jailed in Norway. However, the number rose to 163 in two years.
Right direction
– The results of the police's effort is going in the right direction. It is reflected in the figures for reported crime and the police population survey for 2010, according to which majority of the residents feel safer. We still have major challenges and areas where we need to improve, but we will also bring more positive results in 2011, said the police director Killgreen.
