Historical Conviction of IS Terrorist in Norway

The 24-year-old from Fredrikstad is convicted for terrorist planning and support for the two terrorist organizations, IS and Jabhat al-Nusret in Syria.

Oslo District Court rules based on the suspect’s support for IS and his terror attacks plan in Norway.

The man was sentenced to 8 years in prison. The verdict is unanimous.

The court does not believe in the defendant’s statement that he did humanitarian work in Syria. It was noted that he acquired military equipment before leaving.

– These preparations speaks clearly that defendants had a plan to participate in armed activity in Syria, said the ruling.

The key evidence in the case are emails, messages on Facebook and WhatsApp, writes Aftenposten.

– The defendant’s dialogues show that in the summer and autumn before his departure, he acquired a thorough knowledge of several of the different organizations that fought in Syria, including al-Qaida, ISIL and JMA, said the ruling.

This is the first time a Norwegian foreign warrior is convicted of violating Penal Code § 147. The case is therefore historical.

In May, three people were sentenced by the “new terrorism clause” , § 147 d, but 24-year-old’s case is far more serious because he has been convicted for both planning of terror and supporting a terrorist organization.
