Norway Opens New Aid Measures in the Mediterranean

The Norwegian government is working to send a civilian ship to the area as quickly as possible.

– I am glad that the EU puts the difficult situation in the Mediterranean on its political agenda. This is a challenge that must be solved by Europe and Norway will take its share of responsibility, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg.

Prime Minister letter addressed to President Jean-Claude Juncker, European Commission and President Donald Tusk in the European Council. In the letters Solberg wrote that she is concerned about the desperate situation for refugees and migrants who try to reach Europe. Norway has promised to send a civilian ship in the Mediterranean Sea from August 1. Solberg writes in the letter that the government is now accelerating the Norwegian contribution and will line up as quickly as possible.

Government announced on Tuesday that Norway will also provide NOK 50 million in humanitarian aid through the UN and other organizations in connection with the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. In the letter to EU leaders, Solberg notes that Norway wants close cooperation with the EU in this matter.
