Norwegian government proposed that immigrants should be able to prove a minimum of Norwegian language proficiency and pass a civics test before they can become Norwegian citizens. It is part of proposed amendments to the Citizenship Act that has been sent out for consultation.
The proposal was criticized by some of the opposition parties and interest organizations in Norway.Â
Criticism is intensified with the involvement of language experts. Talking to state broadcasting company, NRK, Norwegian language experts are not impressed with the language of social studies test.
Language professor Finn-Erik Vinje went through the test and found a number grammar mistakes and bad formulations.
– In such a test aimed at foreigners who want to learn about Norwegian society, should have exemplary language, says Vinje.
