Norway to Send Prisoners to the Netherlands

To solve atonement queue, Norway secretly negotiated with the Netherlands to purchase prison places.

– In conversations we have had with the Netherlands so far, hoping that we get a deal where we simply can hire prison places in the Netherlands, but in Norwegian terms with Norwegian director and sentence under Norwegian law, says Norwegian Justice Minister Anundsen.

The Government of the Netherlands tonight informed the Parliament that they would be happy to accept prisoners from Norway. Norway now need to approve the agreement with the Dutch to put the plan in practice.  The number of the inmates to be sent to the Netherlands can be about as much as 300.

– I hope that it will go pretty quickly and we can have this in place during the first half of next year, says Anundsen to TV 2.

First and foremost the prisoners with long sentences and foreign nationals who have a deportation order will be sent out of the country, according to the plans of the Justice Ministry.

– I hope everyone sees the picture of reality we are in the correctional services.  Unfortunately there has become a serious problem because we have focused too little on building new prison places in Norway over many years. Now we have to solve the problem as quickly and creatively as possible. The government has turned over every stone to free up capacity and this is an opportunity while we build new prisons in Norway, says Anundsen to TV 2.

Previously Netherlands rented prison to Belgium.
