– Red Cross volunteers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia in the flood area are now working to evacuate people to safe areas together with relief agencies from the government. They hand out blankets and food to the victims and build barricades to keep water away from critical areas, says Secretary General of the Red Cross in Norway, Åsne Havnelid.
– The needs are great and we are therefore beginning a special fundraiser for the Balkans. There are still thousands waiting to be rescued from the flood hit areas. Flood affected both roads and rail lines and making rescue work difficult. The interest of Norwegians who want to help is too big and it’s amazing, she said.
Røde Kors Volunteers Mobilized in the Balkans
Red Cross movement has contributed to relief efforts since the rescue operation started before the weekend. Volunteers participate actively in search and distributing relief items and contribute to the establishment of evacuation centers for victims.
Approximately 300,000 people in Serbia and 50,000 in Bosnia and Herzegovina are without water, electricity, and are in a situation of great safety and sanitation challenges.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina Red Cross has mobilized emergency response teams in the affected areas where volunteers help authorities with evacuation, and so far some blankets, mattresses, water, food and hygiene kits, rubber boots, and disinfectants have been handed over 10,000 people.
