NHO director Kristin Skogen Lund told NRK that many start school unprepared to absorb teaching. Therefore, she suggests introduction of a free preschool education for those approaching school age.
– We think it is necessary because we scored poor on performance tests such as PISA, says Lund.
NHO envisages a general core of three or four hours where all children participate in learning activities organized around specific learning goals.
Minister of Education Thorbjorn Røe Isaksen agrees with NHO about kindergarten’s important role in learning but opposes the idea of having kindergartens teaching school subjects. I think kindergartens should be a learning arena, but they should not have the same learning objectives we have at schools, said the minister.
