Norway Warns the Egypt Army against Political Oppression

– Norway regrets that the political process has not led to a unifying solution for Egypt and the army intervened and ousted President Mursi and set the constitution aside. Norway has always encouraged President Mursi and the opposition to find solutions to the country’s challenges through a broad and inclusive process. We must conclude that the struggles have failed, says Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

He also said that Norway provides full support for the democratic development in Egypt and it is essential to leave the ground to a civilian government with a democratic election quickly.

– The Army has the responsibility to ensure stability, to safeguard civilians and prevent violence. The requirement to protect the public for all. I would especially warn against imprisoning politicians. No one benefits from political oppression or violent settlement, said the Foreign Minister.
