Belgian Mathematician Pierre Deligne Received Abel Prize

Pierre Deligne, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, USA, receives the Abel Prize “for seminal contributions to algebraic geometry and for their transformative impact on number theory, representation theory, and related fields”.

Before the award ceremony Pierre Deligne was received in audience at the Royal Palace. In the evening the Norwegian Minister of Education and Research, Kristin Halvorsen, will host a banquet at Akershus Castle in honour of the Abel Laureate. Hendrik W. Lenstra, Leiden University, Netherlands, a former member of the Abel Committee, will give a speech.

Abel Lectures

May 22nd, The Abel Laureate will give his prize lecture, titled “Hidden symmetries of algebraic varieties” at the University of Oslo. Then there will be two Abel Lectures by Nicholas Katz, Princeton University, “Life Over Finite Fields”, and by Claire Voisin, École Polytechnique and CNRS,  
“Mixed Hodge structures and the topology of algebraic varieties”. The Science Lecture will this time be delivered by Ravi Vakil, Stanford University. He will talk about “Algebraic geometry and the ongoing unification of mathematics”. All the lectures will be filmed and published on the Abel Prize website,http://www.abelprize.no/

The Abel Lectures will be followed by a reception at the Belgian embassy in Norway and an Abel Party at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Next stop Trondheim

Next stop for the Abel Laureate Pierre Deligne will be the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim (NTNU) where he will meet schoolchildren trying to solve mathematical problems, give a lecture to students at NTNU and be the guest of honour at a banquet hosted by university rector Torbjørn Digernes.

Abel symposium in Stockholm

The week of Abel celebrations will close with a symposium in honour of the Abel Prize Laureate 2013 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on the 24th of May.
