– This will enhance maritime safety further in the northern seas, said Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Lisbeth Berg-Hansen.
Ship reporting system will come into force on 1 June 2013, and has originated in an agreement on maritime safety in 2006 between Russia and Norway.
System will provide Norwegian and Russian authorities increased operative detailed knowledge of shipping traffic in the area, thereby contributing to an earlier warning of traffic that requires special attention.
Barents SRS will also increase the level of service to shipping, and help to ensure that ships have the necessary information and data required for safe navigation in the area.

The Barents Sea (Norwegian: Barentshavet) is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, located north of Norway and Russia.
Oil exploration in the Barents Sea began in the 1970s. Discoveries were made on both the Russian and Norwegian sides. The first major producing field will be Snøhvit in the Norwegian sector. The largest discovery to date is the Shtokman field in the Russian sector. For decades there was a boundary dispute between Norway and Russia, with the Norwegians favouring the Median Line and the Russians favouring a meridian based sector. A compromise treaty announced 27 April 2010 settled the border in the approximate middle of these two stances.
