Norway to Ban Facebook Advertisements

– We believe Facebook to obey the same rules that apply to advertising provided directly by e-mail and text messages. It is not lawful unless the recipient has consented to it, says Petter Ravne Bugten, Director of ICT at the Consumer Ombudsman to Adresseavisen.

More and more advertisers place their advertisements on Facebook users’ personal news feed, in addition to the ads that are found on the right column of the social media giant.

The Norwegian Consumer Ombudsman has allied with the other ombudsmen in Scandinavia, and has now sent a letter to the European Commission with questions about the European-spam legislation.

– We would like to clarify the scope of the directive and the flow of news on Facebook in line with the e-mail and text messages, and thus need consent from the recipient for each posted advertisement, says Ravne Bugten.
