– Once again the monsoon rains led to millions of people affected by floods in Punjab, Sindh and Baluchistan. Hundreds of thousands have lost their properties and need emergency relief. Many of them are children and women. They need extra protection in a very vulnerable situation, says Development Minister, Heikki Eidsvoll Holmås.
After the flood in September, the Pakistani authorities distributed food rations, water, tents and blankets. Also humanitarian organizations try to provide assistance in some districts.
– In addition to the national emergency response, there is a need for international support. An unusually large floods have become normal in Pakistan. Therefore it is also important to raise awareness among people on how to prevent further disasters, says Holmås.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allocated 20 million as a result of the acute humanitarian crisis. The aid passes through UNICEF and the Norwegian Church Aid. This is in addition to the 50 million NOK allocation in 2012 for humanitarian crises in Pakistan. In June, the ministry had also provided another 18 million NOK in support to moving works in Khyber province.
