On 1 January 2012, Norway will have 4.860.000 inhabitants with an increase as much as in 1920. Forecasts show that there will be growth in the population in 315 of the 430 municipalities in the country in 2011. This is a record high. Forecasts further show that there will be growth in 100 of the 177 least central municipalities in the country.
Immigration accounts for about two-thirds of the growth.
– We see that the positive trend of growth in population in the country continues. Immigration means a lot of growth in the smallest municipalities in Norway. I am looking forward to the growth in population in the whole country, from city to small communities, says Local Government and Regional Minister Liv Signe.
