– Our goal is to ensure more foreign prisoners to be transferred to continue serving in their home country and make it happen faster, said Justice Minister Knut Storberget. Therefore, the Government wishes to get Norway into the EU framework on prison transfer.
About 30 percent of inmates in Norwegian prisons are foreign nationals. The Government has signed individual serving transfer agreements with Romania, Lithuania and Latvia.
So far this year, 27 people were transferred to their home country. In 2009 the number of the transferred prisoners was 30 people after entering into European Convention. In 2010, this number increased to 41 persons.
