Norwegians Want to Close the Borders

Norwegian daily Aftenposten focused on the results of Integration Barometer 2010, which is mapping Norwegians' attitudes towards immigration and integration. According to the study, a widespread and growing skepticism prevail among the Norwegian people.

53.7 percent of 1380 participants said they do not want more immigrants in Norway. In 2005, the figure was 45.8 percent. Survey shows a negative trend in the general view of integration. 48.7 percent believe that the integration of immigrants fails – with an increase of 12 percentage points since 2005.

When the respondents are asked about the cause of the disintegration, 60 percent said the problem is caused by lack of contributions from the Norwegians, while 83.5 percent believe it can be linked to lack of effort from the immigrants.

On the other hand, six out of ten say they are completely or partially disagree that the authorities show enough effort to integrate immigrants into Norwegian society. Also, eight out of ten think all immigrants should demonstrate their Norwegian skills through a language test to be granted citizenship.
