More Hospitalized Patients Have Alcohol Problem

The recent survey reported by NTB, was conducted at two hospitals in Bergen, and Stavanger University Hospitals in 2009. 1500 patients participated in the survey.

Kristian Oppedal the Department of Addictive Substances at Haukeland University Hospital says the hospital's information service and health-care professionals should discuss alcohol use with their patients. Oppedal also noted that high alcohol consumption can affect the medical treatment of patients.

– In some operations total abstinence from alcohol for four weeks before surgery may reduce to half the risk of complications, “said he.

Oppedal also warned against drinking more than five drinks in one night stating that drinking over the limit increases the risk of several types of cancer, high blood pressure, liver damage and a number of other diseased.
