The opening ceremony of this year's summer school was held in City Hall. Deputy mayor Aud Kvalbein hosted the attendants in the hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out 10 December each year.
Rector Ole Petter Ottersen made his speech about how the international summer school has helped to add conditions to ensure that students from different lines of conflict can meet on neutral ground in Norway and to become acquainted with each other.
– Confidence and bridge-building-projects for students from the former Yugoslavia and the Caucasus region is a special witness to this dialogue work. In the same way I refer to the Nobel Peace Prize Forum with 10 bachelor students from the United States can continue to further peace and conflict studies after they have first been introduced for the annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum at their home university , told Ottersen.
25 000 students from 150 countries
The rector also pointed that the summer school has hosted 25,000 students from 150 countries in 64 years.
– It is because it lives up to the quality demands we place on all our units . It was the positive interaction between students , teach rob and management and the strong weight put on the school multi- cultural communication were some of the key factors for the Summer school", said Ottersen.
The summer school having started on 26th of June will finish with a farewell party on 5th of August.
