UN creates new Equality Unit

Kirkens informasjonstjeneste/ A total of four existing units at the United Nations are merged into the new body , which will be named " UN Women ". By collecting work will be the UN's efforts for women and gender equality be significantly strengthened.

The creation of the new body was one of the recommendations that the UN reform panel headed by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg presented in 2006. Norway has since then worked hard to establish the equality unit.

– I am very happy that we have a gender unit in the UN. Now it is important that it has a strong and competent leader, with enough money at their disposal. Norway is prepared to contribute to this effort , “said Environment and Development Erik Solheim.
