The new tax regulation proposed by the government initiated a debate of double taxation risk of Norwegian citizens living abroad. After some newspapers write that the Norwegian pensioners residents living in other countries may have to pay double tax as a result of the new regulation, the Finance Minister Kristin Halvorsen said the proposal will have little or no influence on how much the individuals must pay the tax.
The regulation aims that pensioners who have moved out of the country should pay tax to Norway. As a result of the proposed changes in tax rules for pensioners who have moved outside the country, Norway will receive a larger portion of the tax that pensioners pay, while the country of residence will receive a smaller proportion. The tax for pensioners will not change in cases where the pensioner is paying some tax in the country of residence.
