Tariff Cuts on Textile Imports Worry Norwegian Producers

In the proposed budget for 2013, government halved tariff rates on textile imports and even toll is removed for products from 29 developing countries. Retailers are celebrating this decision as they think the decision will enbale cheaper clothing.

On the other hand, Norwegian producers think reduced tariffs would worsen the competition for them. CEO of Norwegian brand Dale of Norway Øyvind Lauritzen says to NTB that imported clothing is already cheaper than Norwegian produced. Tariff cut makes the price difference even larger between Norwegian products and imported goods. It becomes harder to maintain the remaining Norwegian production, says Lauritzen.
