Energy drives our economic growth and prosperity – but our energy use is damaging our planet. We all embrace the calls for change, but are we willing to accept the consequences? The world is crying out for energy diversification, sustainability and security of supply while keeping costs low.
Major commitments have been made and billions spent on reducing carbon emissions – but have we reversed climate change? Hydrocarbons, by many viewed as an outdated source, nevertheless provide eighty-five percent of global energy needs and will continue to fuel the world economy for many decades to come. Renewables are now in the limelight, but arguably lack the scope, immediacy and economics to change the outcome as much as we would like.
We are living in an age of turbulent change. The playing field is no longer level. Climate change and energy policies are not viewed synergistically. Politics and markets are in conflict. So can we agree on a global energy policy and avoid an energy crisis?
All of these difficult questions are to be discussed in the biennial energy meeting in Stavanger, ONS 2012.
“Few industries are facing more paradoxes than the energy sector. At ONS 2012 we will focus on deconstructing these paradoxes in an effort to create new opportunities”, says Kjell Ursin-Smith, President & CEO of the ONS Foundation.
“We must cross traditional cultural and industrial boundaries and develop technologies to resolve the great challenges we face. At ONS we gain inspiration from the paradoxes themselves, knowing that we will make progress only by confronting them.”
This year ONS’s main theme has been proposed by an international conference committee chaired by Jørgen Kildahl, member of the Management Board at E.ON AG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at E.ON Ruhrgas AG.
In addition to its position in the conference programme, the theme will also be reflected in the four-day ONS Exhibition. The committee is now working to assemble the programme for the conference, which will be held 28-31 August 2012.
Participants from more than 100 countries are expected to attend ONS 2012.

The ONS Festival
Beside the conferences and exhibitions, ONS host an amazing festival with a lot of activities. The ONS Festival offers three nights of wonderful culinary experiences, music and entertainment provided by top Norwegian and international entertainers – right in the heart of Stavanger every night from 28 – 30 August 2012.
During the Festival, Stavanger`s intimate harbour will be transformed into a miniature urban village. Several guest cities and company pavilions will offer unique food, drink and entertainment from their respective parts of the world.
Per Dybvig is ONS artist in 2012. Dybvig is a widely recognised graphic artist with a range of publications, illustrations, books and awards behind him. Each year a special artist is selected to hold an exhibition adding a cultural touch for our visitors.
The attendants will also enjoy music with opening and closing concerts. An extraordinary and elegant evening with performances from well-known Norwegian and international entertainers will open the event and the Norwegian rock band Kaizers Orchestra will perform for the ONS Closing Concert on the festival site in Stavanger harbour (Vågen) on Thursday 30 August.
