Number of Norwegian Fishermen Halved in 17 years

Talking to TV2, regional director of the Directorate of Fisheries Department in Tromsø (Fiskeridirektoratets) Gunnar Trulsen thinks it is a paradox that Norway lose so much culture, expertise and experience within the fishing industry.

On the other hand, managing director of the Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organisation Trygve Myrvang does not see the situation that worrysome. Myrvang says that currently every fishing boat can catch up to twice or three times as much fish as done 17 years ago. Myrvang believes that the fishing industry today is far better equipped than 20 years ago. There are plenty of fish, and there is demand for it to be addressed as a result of good Norwegian-Russian management of shared stocks in the Barents Sea.
