Norway Said No to UN Resolution against Nuclear Weapons

Norway voted against UN resolution stating that all states have an ethical responsibility to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons. In addition the country abstained when UN resolution on nuclear humanitarian consequences were treated.

Government parties are pressured by a united opposition to have a more proactive role in the fight against nuclear weapons and for an international ban, writes NRK. However, government representatives do not aggree with the idea.

– A ban on nuclear weapons violates NATO Strategic Concept from 2010 that states that NATO will be a nuclear alliance as long as there are nuclear weapons, and the concept describes nuclear weapons as a key element of NATO’s deterrent strategy. Therefore none of the NATO countries including Norway voiced for these resolutions, said Foreign Minister Børge Brende to Aftenposten.
