The Norwegian Historical Society (HIFO) believes that the refusal is due to Chinese government’s dissatisfaction with Bøckman’s use of freedom of expression.
The association strongly condemns that the Chinese authorities in this way prevent free academic exchange, reports TV2.
– It is totally unacceptable that a researcher does not participate in an open, international academic conference because host government dislikes the participant’s utterances. We have raised this matter with the global historians organization CISH, which is responsible for the World Congress, and expect that this will have an aftermath, says the association’s deputy Marthe Hommerstad.
Bøckman was also denied entry to China during the Olympics.
