The incoming prime minister clearly states that they will not give up the plans on drilling in Lofoten , VesterĂĄlen and Senja.
– This is not something to easily give up. We can find solutions to these issues by taking care of the environment and fisheries, says Solberg to TV 2 .
She also points out that the Conservatives received a good support from the communities in the North despite their desire for oil drilling.
– It would be to deny that our representatives from Northern Norway and many others are not concerned about the oil and gas industry. We won the municipal elections both in Lofoten and VesterĂĄlen , we have done a good parliamentary elections there. We have done this because people are concerned that there will be oil and gas activities in the area. It is clear that it is important for employment and economic development, and not to feel that you are in the backwater , while oil activities are going on in other areas in the north.
However, the oher possible member of the new coalition, Liberals (Venstre) has a clear oppositional approach to oil drilling in the area. Venstre demands, according to VG, a quick clarification on Lofoten and Vesterålen’s proection from oil drilling in the next four years. Without such clarification, there would be great opposition in the party to go into government negotiations with the Conservative Party and the Progress Party.
– Preservation of Lofoten , VesterĂĄlen and Senja is extraordinarily important issue for us. We must see how it will be on Monday , said the Young Liberal leader and newly elected member of parliament Sveinung Rotevatn.
