These Countries Refuse Nobel Peace Prize

As explained by the secretary of the Nobel Peace Committee, Geir Lundeshtad, who is responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize, six countries have refused to send their representatives to attend the ceremony, without naming specific reasons for such a move.

In October of this year Chinese representatives have strongly condemned the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to dissident Liu Xiaobo, imprisoned in a Chinese prison. According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of China, this step should be regarded as interference of foreign governments in its political structure. "This move not only disrespectful to the Chinese legal system: it calls into questioning the true intentions (of the committee)," – said the Foreign Ministry.

Recall, the Norwegian Nobel Committee, formally unrelated to the Government of Norway, has awarded the Peace Prize to Chinese human rights activist who is serving an 11-year prison sentence for "incitement to subvert state power." Official Beijing has described the decision as an insult, stating that it is contrary to the principles and spirit of the Nobel movement.

Liu Xiaobo began actively pursuing human rights activities as early as 1980. He took part in the protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989 resulting in imprisoning for the first time. He subsequently spent three years in labor camps. Dissident was detained again in December 2008 after signing the so-called "Charter 08" – a manifesto of Chinese intellectuals in support of universal human rights.
