– Crime is becoming more international and Norway is committed to agreements, and close cooperation in the justice field with other countries, says Justice Minister Knut Storberget.
The Minister of Justice is working hard to get more foreigners who are following the rules in Norway, to serve in their own homeland. The agreement with Romania will make it easier to transfer Romanian defendant to prison in their home country and vice versa.
The agreement streamlines and simplifies the transfer process. The convicted person can be transmitted faster than the European Convention regulates currently. The agreement provides for faster processing and allows for prison transfer in cases where transmission is not possible with the current regulations.
Compared with 2008, the number of prison transfers from Norway doubled in 2009. Furthermore, there are many ongoing cases. There are currently 59 Romanian nationals in Norwegian prisons.
