Will the Conservatives be a Welfare Party?

-Conservative Party's soul lies in the welfare policy , ” said Erna Solberg in her speech yesterday. She added that they cultivate the Conservative party as a welfare party. Former Young Conservative leader and member of parliament for the party, Torbjørn Røe Isaksen supported Solberg's statements. He noted it is positive to see that the Right wing decided not to leave the welfare debate to left alone.

However, Socialist Left Party (SV)'s parliamentary leader, Bård Vegar Solhjell said Conservatives has never become a welfare party.

– It's like saying that SV is an oil party , says Solhjell in his interwiev with Dagsavisen.

He pointed out that the Conservative Party have argued against voting rights for women, 8- hour workday, the establishment of the Loan Fund , and the introduction of old age insurance , disability and unemployment benefits throughout history.

Solhjell claimed that both of Conservative Party's history and program, and what they have done in recent years deny their being a welfare party.

Conservative Party (Høyre) Ideology

Høyre presents itself as a social reform party working within the constitutional framework. The party has both traditional conservative and more liberal wings. In the 1800s, the Conservatives first and foremost was a traditional conservative party. In the 1900s, however, conservative and liberal interests often go hand in hand. Høyre now adopts an ideology based on a mixture of classic, conservative values, economic liberalism and a more tolerant attitude in social policy.
