On March 6 , Police Directorate requested from Ministry of Justice a further extension of the arming of police.
Threat situation that gives grounds for the current consent is based on Police Intelligence Service (PST)’s assessment of the international threat. In a threat assessment by PST on 31 October 2014, it was noted that police personnel were primary target for a possible terrorist attack.
Police Directorate thinks that the threat is still serious and want uniformed personnel to have necessary approvals for carrying gun. Ministry of Justice approved the request.
Police have now been temporarily armed since 25 November 2014.
