Jon Fosse’s ’Visits’ Visit UK

Between a recently divorced mother, her daughter, her son and her new man, an ambiguous and disturbing relationship forms. One day the daughter confides in her brother her secret; and we follow the consequences of that revelation and the ensuing attempt at a confrontation. The drip-dripping of their words, all that is unsaid and their silence, all skim the surface of their emotions and what is really going on. ‘Visits’ is a play that shows us a great rift within families; between individuals who are hanging dangerously over emptiness, because they are unable to hang on to each other.

Fosse, who received the prestigious Ibsen Award in Norway earlier this year, is one of the leading names in modern drama today. Since his debut at the Bergen National Theatre in 1994, his plays have been performed all over the world, in more than nine hundred productions. His works have been translated into over 40 languages which include even Albanian, Hebrew, Catalonian, Persian, Slovenian and Tibetan. ‘Visits’, which was first staged in Bergen in 2002, is one of the least performed plays by Fosse.

‘Visits’ director Lars Harald Gathe, who founded the Frogme Theatre Company in 2009, has directed several short films, including the award winning feature ‘Ulysses Road’ in 2005. According to Gathe, Visit’s is a “psychologically penetrating and fairly dark family drama, which promises to be an atmospheric production with an unconventional site-specific design by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (BOVTS) -graduate Christopher Faulds.”
