Record Increase in Child Abuse Investigations

In the first half of 2010, the Oslo Police District conducted 52 examinations by questioning the children who may have been exposed to violence or sexual assault. In the same period of 2011, more than 100 judicial examinations of children were done, writes newspaper VG.

The head of violence and sexual section of the Oslo police, Hanne Kristin Rohde attributed the increase to the new amendment regarding children who are exposed to any level of violence are seen as victims, and also the major political and societal focus on family violence, that encourages more investigation.

– The rapid growth does not necessarily mean that there is more child abuse, but the threshold for investigation may be less in line with public focus on vulnerable children, says Barnehusets (Children's House) Executive Director Astrid Johanne Pettersen.
