The parties affected by the piracy have started to discuss the feasability of the armed guard proposal. According to the proposal, the use of armed guards may be appropriate in certain areas, specifically in the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean as a result of the growing aggressiveness of the pirates.

Necessary changes in the law regulating security operations will be made first. It is expected that the Act on prohibition of armed guards on ships will be exepmted. The change will allow hiring of security companies with weapons.

Trade and Industry Ministry will bring the issue to discuss with the Justice authorities and the industry in the following weeks.
