Telenor May Pull Out of India

Norway‘s international telecommunication company Telenor ASA is said to be quitting India because it had been "unfairly harmed" by a court order cancelling licences including those held by its local venture.

On the other hand, Sigve Brekke, executive vice president and head of Asian operations said the Norwegian company doesn't plan to slow its operations in India. "We came to India to win, we came here to stay," said he.

In the previous week, the Indian Supreme Court delivered its judgment on a public interest petition seeking cancellation of 122 cellular phone licences granted by the Government of India in 2008, including 22 licences to Uninor.

Telenor in India

Telenor is the incumbent telecommunications company in Norway, with headquarters located at Fornebu, close to Oslo. Today, Telenor Group is mostly an international wireless carrier with operations in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Asia, working predominantly under the Telenor brand. At the end of 2010, its 203 million subscribers made it one of the largest mobile phone operators in the world.

Eight months after entering into India, Telenor's local venture, Uninor started offering its services in December 2009 with the biggest ever launch in Indian telecommunications history with its 24.190 million mobile subscriptions in the country.
